Sallacoa Creek Watershed Structure No. 77 is a 50-ft high, 700-ft long earthen dam built in the 1970s by NRCS. In early 2008 the dam experienced significant subsidence (sinkhole) in a portion of the downstream slope which resulted in a loss of about 5,000 cy of soil.
Piedmont Geotechnical Consultants was retained by NRCS/GSWCC to conduct subsurface surveys to map the extent of the karst features under the dam. The work included electrical resistivity studies, soil test borings and air track drilling. Ultimately it was concluded that it was impractical to restore the dam due to the massive degradation of the foundation under the dam.
